THIS rare aurora looks just like a spooky face looming ominously in the sky.
The unusual sight was photographed by Tom Mackie during a trip to Iceland in this year.
The bizarre vision – which also appears to resemble the iconic Christmas Scrooge ‘The Grinch’ – hovers with a weird green-red glow in the night sky.
Below the frightening spectre a small isolated clutch of buildings can be seen as if caught in the creature’s gaze.
Tom, 55, who runs photography workshops to Iceland and Norway each year to photograph the aurora, said: “I’ve never seen it form a face like this before, I have seen ones with different colours “When you have a high solar activity like we did when we took this shot, you do get the reds which you can also see in this shot.
“This was something special, 50 per cent of the local population of Iceland actually believe in trolls and this was something they were kind of amazed by.
“Funnily enough the best aurora I’ve ever seen was actually here in Norfolk, but this was the first time I’d ever seen something like this.”
Tom, who is originally from America but lives in Norfolk, used Nikon D800 with a 14-24mm f/2.8 lens mounted on to a Gitzo tripod.
