A bank robber caused a great disturbance in the force when he held up a credit union dressed as Darth Vader.
The unknown criminal brandished a rifle at a bank teller as he ordered her to put money in a bag in Pineville, North Carolina.
He then escaped the scene yesterday in a four-door grey Chevy Suburban.
The attack of the clone is serious enough that the local police department has joined forces with the FBI’s local branch to investigate it.
Police said they believe the criminal was black, despite the fact he was dressed head to toe in the Star Wars costume including a Darth Vader mask.
Officers have released full surveillance footage of the crime, which took place at 11.45am at the town’s State Employees Credit Union.
At 5ft 5in the robber was a full foot shorter than Darth Vader actor Dave Prowse, who famously towered over his co-stars in the sci-fi classic.
But the trail is currently as cold as the icy rebel-held planet of Hoth.
None of the suburban town’s 7,000 citizens have yet recalled a sighting of a man dressed as Darth Vader yesterday.
And police lieutenant Corey Copley told Mirror Online: “We have not interviewed anyone from a costume shop at this time.
“That may be a strong consideration moving forward.”
The town’s entire police force has 38 officers and it suffered just two robberies and five burglaries in January.
